Gaudets deserve name change honor
News can be a nasty business, and very often we have to report things from the darker side of human nature. But every now and again, we have the opportunity to report on stories that make our hearts feel good, and today is one of those days.
While the renaming of Jennings High School’s gym might not seem like news story of the year, we’re happy to see the move to rename the structure after Louis and Jeanette Gaudet (see page one story).
In addition to giving their professional lives to Jeff Davis Parish education, they’ve continued to be the JHS’s biggest supporters in so many ways. As if that weren’t enough, they’re two of the nicest people you will have the opportunity to meet during your time in Jennings. It is fitting that the gym should carry their names.
To make the renaming possible, people will have to get into the act. A petition must first receive 50 signatures from registered Jeff Davis Parish voters before the process can begin. That petition can be found at Jennings High School. You should sign it, if you get the opportunity to stop by. Be one of the 50 – you’ll feel good about it.
It’s also a great idea to see school structures named after educators, the people who give their blood, sweat and tears to the children in those buildings. Lots of people in Jennings have done great things and could have something permanent named after them. Few people, however, have the broad-scope, long-term, life-changing reach of an educator.
Lou and Jeanette Gaudet aren’t the only educators in this parish who have given their adult lives to bringing up future generations. But when you say the words “Jennings Bulldogs,” few faces spring to mind faster than their “superfans,” the Gaudets. Let’s tell them ‘thank you” for the work they’ve done for our youth.
