Tobacco tax renewal could be left up to voters
BATON ROUGE – The renewal of a 4-cent tax on tobacco has stalled in the state Senate, as lawmakers and the governor’s office remain at odds about the tax renewal during the last days of the legislative session.
The House attached the tax extension to a Jindal administration bill to redirect a stream of tobacco settlement money to the state’s free college tuition program, called the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS).
