Calendar Guidelines
Items for Community Calendar must be submitted in writing during regular weekday business hours at least two weeks prior to the day of the event. We will make every effort to run the item twice before the event, though it should be noted all events run in the order of their posted dates and only as space allows. Events more than two weeks away may not run until closer to the event. Each event should feature no more than two contact phone numbers. Community Calendar is offered as a public service bulletin for Jeff Davis Parish community and non-profit events. Send entries to jenn...@bellsouth.net. To publicize your event in a specific way on certain days, call 824-3011 to speak to an advertising representative.

AARP Tax Aide
AARP Tax Aide is offering free tax preparation and e-filing at the Louisiana Technical College-Morgan Smith Campus, located at 1230 North Main Street, from  9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Fridays only. Call 824-4811 for details.

March 10-17
Early Voting Period
The early voting period for the March 24 presidential preference election is scheduled for March 10-17. Voters can cast their votes during the early voting period (excluding Sunday, March 11) at the parish Registrar of Voters office located at 302 N. Cutting Ave. in Jennings. The registrars of voters will open their offices from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for each day of early voting.

March 15
Tongues of Fire
Buster Richards will be speaking at the Tongues of Fire Prayer Group meeting on Thursday, March 15. The meeting is held in the Family Room at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 7 p.m.

March 16
OLPH Fish Fry
Our Lady of Perpetual Help will host a fish fry dinner Friday, March 16, that will consist of fried fish, catfish courtboullion, potato salad and green beans for $8. Pickup will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at OLPH Hall at 920 S. Broadway Street in Jennings. For more info, call 824-3182.

Voices of Brotherhood Musical
The officers and members of the Jeff Davis Voices of Brotherhood will host its 23rd annual musical on Friday, March 16, and Saturday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Union Baptist Church. The church is located at 1014 South Main Street.

March 17
Edolia Gordon Raffle
A benefit raffle to help offset medical expenses for Edolia Gordon, who suffers from cancer, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, at 718 Orange Street in Jennings. Prizes include an ice cream maker, a waffle maker and a surprise money bag. Participants do not need to be present to win and monetary donations are welcomed. Womanless Pageant Fundraiser
The Acadia Parish Relay for Life team will host a womanless pageant fundraiser from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Gueydan Civic Center. There is no charge for contestants to participate but a form must be filled out. People ages 13 sand older may enter. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for kids 12 and under. A Block Off Broadway Community Theatre will present “The

March 19
OLI New Family Registration
OLI’s New Family Registration opens Monday, March 19 in the school office. We want you to experience family, religious, social, and academic values with us. Registration packets and tours are available now. To register, we will ask for your child’s birth certificate, current immunization records, and Baptism certificate.  Call 824-1743 for more information.

St. Joseph Altar
St. Joseph Catholic Church of Evangeline and St. Jules Mission Chapel of Tee Mamou will present the St. Joseph Altar on Monday, March 19, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Hall. There will be crawfish fettucini, shrimp mold, special breads, cookies and more.

March 19-23
James Ward Registration
James Ward Elementary School will hold pre-K and new student registration from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 19-23, in the office.
Students must be 4 years old by Sept. 30, 2012, to enter pre-K and must be 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2012, to enter kindergarten. Parents or guardians should bring the child’s birth certificate, social security card and immunization (shot) record to register. Students who are currently enrolled in pre-K at Ward do not need to re-register. Parents are not required to bring students to registration.

March 20
Book Club
The Jeff Davis Parish Book Club discussion group will meet at the Carnegie Library in Jennings on Tuesday, March 20 at 10 a.m. to discuss the book “Twelve Years A Slave” by Shannon Northrup. Achievement Day
The Jeff Davis Volunteers for Family and Community (VFC) will hold its annual Achievement Day at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20. This will be at the Multipurpose Building at the fairgrounds. All members are urged to  attend and participate.

March 22
FYI Class: Easter Decorations
The Jeff Davis Parish Public Library will hold its next FYI Class at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 22 at the Jennings Branch. Make crafty Easter ornament decorations with Betty Miller. A $5 materials fee will be assessed. Class may exceed one hour. Seating is limited. Must register. Call 824-1210.

March 24
River Fest
The fifth annual River Fest will kick off Saturday, March 24, starting at 1 p.m. at Lake Arthur City Park. There will be music, food and fun for all ages. A Band Called River will close out the day’s music lineup at 7 p.m. A car, truck and bike show will also take place at park with registration at 9 a.m. Saturday, public judging at 11 a.m. followed by an award ceremony. Women’s Prayer Breakfast
St. Paul Baptist Church will host a women’s prayer breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 24. The event will feature music from Extreme Gospel Choir, along with special guests Sister Veronica Noel of True Light Missionary Baptist Church and Sister Gloria D. Midland High Mattress Sale
Midland High School Yearbook Staff will be hosting their 2nd Annual Mattress Fundraiser Sale on Saturday, March 24, 2012. The sale will be held in the school’s “little” gym from 10am-5pm. There will be 20 different mattress sets to choose from, available in all sizes, including twin, full, queen, king, California-king and even special sizes.  Just like in a mattress or furniture showroom, customers can lay on and try out every set.  Styles include plush sets, pillow-top sets, latex, memory foam and much more.  The mattresses are new and name brand with full factory warranties and all will be priced 30-60% below retail prices. Bed frames and mattress protectors will also be available. Delivery is available. All forms of payment will be accepted and profits will go directly to the Yearbook. Cake Bingo Benefit
A cake bingo benefit for Blackie Cormier to help defray funeral expenses will be held Saturday, March 24, at the KC Hall on Hwy. 102 in Jennings. March 25
KC Barbecue
K.C. Council 2012 will host its annual fundraiser on Sunday, March 25. Service time will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Center on State Street in Jennings. The menu will consist of a half chicken, potato salad, baked beans and bread for $7. Call any knight for tickets or Norman Briggs at 368-1091. Food can be delivered. Must make request by March 18.

March 27
LAES Roundup
Lake Arthur Elementary will hold its annual pre-k and kindergarten roundup for the 2012-2013 year on Tuesday, March 27. Parents are to report to the LAES All-Purpose/Gym between 8:30 a.m. until noon with a copy of their child’s birth certificate, shot record and Social Security card. Parents are asked not to bring their children with them unless they have speech concerns. The speech therapist will be available to screen the children. There will be no vision and hearing screenings. School nurses will be checking shot records. To register for kindergarten, children must be five years old by Sept. 30, 2012. To register for pre-k, children must be four years old on or before Sept. 30, 2012. Parents should be prepared to give proof of residence if needed or required.

Medicare/Medicaid Seminar
Are you a senior citizen, agency, organization or church that assists seniors in anyway? Then you may want to learn more about Louisiana Answers/ADRC and SenioRx.  New 2012 Medicare/Medicaid benefits and various other programs that can be beneficial to you will be discussed at a seminar on Tuesday, March 27, from 9-11 a.m. at the Jeff Davis Parish Library. Sponsored by Louisiana Answers/ADRC and the Jeff Davis Council on Aging.

March 28
Senior Citizen Luncheon
Jeff Davis Parish Volunteers for Family and Community and the Jeff Davis Living Center and Wellness Facility will hold a free senior citizen luncheon on Wednesday, March 28, at the Knights of Columbus Hall 2.7 miles north of the red light at the overpass on North Cutting. Golden Chain Baptist Church Revival
Golden Chain Baptist Church will be holding its annual Revival March 28-30 at 7 p.m. nightly, at the church located at 1815 Martin Luther King Dr. in Elton. This year’s theme is “Awaking Households with the Truth of the Gospel,” from Acts 16:30-31. The speaker will be the Rev. Joel Greene Jr., Pastor of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church of Lafayette. OLI’s “The Way of the Cross”
Everyone is invited to reflect on The Way of the Cross on Friday, March 30 at 2 p.m. in the OLI gym.  Our 7th graders will narrate and perform this special presentation.

Cancer Benefit
A cancer benefit and trail ride to help offset medical expenses for April Thibodeaux Perkins will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at Wilsie and Carolyn Cormier’s at 12306 Radio Tower Road in Welsh. Entry fee per person is $5. Auction right after ride and dance that evening. March 31
Lions Lottery Run
The Jennings Lions Club’s annual Lottery run is set to take place on Saturday, March 31, and will benefit the Louisiana Crippled Children’s Camp and the Louisiana Eye Foundation. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hampton Inn in Jennings. The first bike will leave at 10 a.m. and the cost to participate is $20 per driver and $15 per passenger. April 1
Easter Cantata
The Welsh Community Choir will present its annual Easter cantata, Champion of Love, on Palm Sunday, April 1, at the First Methodist Church at 9 a.m. and at the First Baptist Church at 6 p.m.  The public is invited to attend either of these services.

April 3
Book Club

American Legion
The James O. Hall Post 19 of the American Legion will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 3, beginning at 6 p.m. The meeting will be conducted at the American Legion Hall located at 111 N. Market Street in Jennings. The Post’s Ladies Auxiliary will also meet on the same date and at the same time and location. Any military veteran who is considering joining the Legion is invited to attend the Post’s meeting in order to find out more about this patriotic organization. Southside Easter Egg Hunt
An Easter egg hunt will be held at Southside Park Saturday, April 7, at 1:30 p.m. for children ages one through 11. The event is sponsored by Amercion Legion Frank Thibodeaux Union 520. The egg hunt is open to the public.

The Jeff Davis Communities Against Domestic Abuse will host its Spring Arts and Crafts Show on Saturday, April 21, at the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park in Jennings. Vendors can sign up for this year’s event by downloading the entry form at http://jeffdaviscada.com and returning it by March 16.

Roanoke High School Reunion
Roanoke High School will have a reunion on April 21 at the Welsh Fire Hut. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and lunch may be purchased for a meal at 11:30 a.m. The program begins at 1 p.m. and is open to anyone attendees or graduates of Roanoke High School before its closure in 1966. Time for Change Narcotics Anonymous
Time for Change Narcotics Anonymous are a group of addicts who meet regularly. Narcotics Anonymous has many years experience with literally hundreds of thousands of addicts and is here to share freely with any addict who wants to recover. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using. Time for Change Narcotics Anonymous group meets every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Jennings United Methodist Church, 702 Cary Avenue.

Morning Call Al-Anon
The Al- Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. Morning Call Al-Anon Group meets every Monday at 7 p.m. and Thursday at noon at the Jennings United Methodist Church, 702 Cary Avenue.

Celebrate Recovery
Meetings for Celebrate Recovery, a program of recovery from addictions and co-dependency, will meet every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lake Arthur and every Thursday at 7 p.m. in the north foyer at Bethel Ministries in Jennings. Mental Health Support Group
The NAMI Connections Mental Health Support Group will meet every Wednesday from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Jennings American Legion Hospital in the classroom on the second floor. For more information, call 246-1796 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Wig Closet
The Jeff Davis Parish Wig Closet is open for all cancer treatment patients to access free of charges. Free wigs, hats, scarves and more can be selected. The Wig Closet is located at Thibodeaux, Albro and Touchet Therapy Group, 1322 Elton Road, Suite 1 in Jennings. Call 821-5532 for more information.

Compassionate Friends
Compassionate Friends, a self-help support organization for families dealing with the death of a child of any age, meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Women and Children’s Hospital (main entrance, first door to the right). Alzheimer’s Support Group
Jennings Senior Care and The Jeff Davis Council on Aging (COA) will hold an Alzheimer’s disease support group every first Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. The meetings will be held at the COA located at 210 State Street.  For more information contact COA at 824-5504.

Jennings Farmers Market
Each Saturday, rain or shine, the Main Street Farmers Market in Jennings is open from 7-10 a.m. in Founders Park. Some items available are fresh vegetables and produce, crafts, baked goods, fresh eggs, canned goods and more. To qualify as a vendor for the Main Street Farmers Market you must make, raise, or grow what you intend to sell.  No store bought or import items are allowed.  There is no fee to be a vendor, but you must fill out a participation form at the Farmers Market. Welsh Farmer’s Market
The Welsh Farmers Market is held each Tuesday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. across from Welsh City Hall. All homemade and homegrown items welcomed. For more information, call (337) 734-2231.
