Got rice?

It’s a good thing Jeff Davis Parish farmers grow a lot of rice, because in this area, we can never get enough.

Tomorrow, September 1, marks the beginning of a time that most of us probably consider a holiday in Southwest Louisiana: National Rice Month.

Since 1991, when both houses of Congress and the President of the United States endorsed September as National Rice Month, the USA Rice Federation has been hard at work building awareness and programs that pay off with impressive increases in rice sales and usage for all that participate.

Every September, thousands of U.S. rice displays are set in grocery stores across the country in the nation’s leading retailers, exposing hundreds of millions of consumers to U.S.-grown rice. Retailers who participate in National Rice Month using materials supplied by the USA Rice Federation typically see an average increase in their rice sales of 50-400 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That’s not surprising considering that rice is a staple in many meals, used as everything from a side dish to a dessert.

Jeff Davis Parish will soon show its love for rice, too, as the annual 5K Rice Run hits downtown Jennings on Saturday, Sept. 22. On top of getting in a good exercise, walkers and runners will also be working to promote just how much this area loves Louisiana rice (especially if it’s grown in Jeff Davis Parish).
