New merchants group will promote success

One group of downtown business owners and concerned residents are working together for promote economic development and tourism in their town.

The group is forming a new merchants association in an effort to unite the community and bring in new visitors to the Lake Arthur area.

The purpose of the organization is to promote the welfare of its membership and to promote improvements and civic pride in the community, as well as work to keep members informed on matters of community concern.

The collaboration may also produce benefits to the area’s many new and growing small businesses. For example, some merchants may choose to combine their orders for their business so they will get a better price from the wholesaler.

In addition to promoting the welfare of its membership, the group will work together to put on smaller, community-based events to get residents, as well as visitors out to enjoy Lake Arthur’s thriving downtown area.

Events like the Boo on the Avenue and a scarecrow contest in October, Junk in the Trunk, a gardening festival, a trade days festival, as well as Christmas shopping days. While these events might be smaller in scale, they can be just as effective at getting the community to gather downtown and support local businesses – and even more cost effective.

Because membership is also opened to concerned residents, the newly formed merchants association will also help give business owners, as well as residents, a voice in what goes on in their community.

By working together, Lake Arthur merchants will be more successful, and the downtown area will continue to thrive for years to come.

The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at Town Hall. The association is open to local merchants and individuals in Lake Arthur and the surrounding area. The deadline to join the association is Aug. 15.
