Reader Discusses ‘Fairness’ vs. ‘Pragmatism’
Dear Editor,
The political debate taking place now is being fought on two different levels. Our politicians are pitting ‘fairness’ against ‘pragmatism.’ While the right is fighting for what is pragmatic, the left is fighting for what they perceive to be fairness.
For example, the right thinks it’s pragmatic to lower the corporate tax rate and in so doing, encourage the business world to make investments and hire more people, which would work towards (pragmatism) improving our economy.
On the other hand, the left throws up this emotionally-based strawman called fairness. It goes like this: it is not fair for some to have a lot of money while others have little or no money. So, we will invoke the ‘Robin Hood Act’ and take it from the rich and give it to the poor. This is called socialism. Socialism has been tried in Europe and has failed miserably. It is a failed experiment. So, the left is not interested in what works (pragmatism) because they are ideologues who are trying to resurrect the dead corpse of socialism and make it live again.
Well, dead is dead. End of discussion.
Sincerely,
Mickey Istre
