Volunteer with veterans
If you want to spend a few dollars that will benefit local veterans while also spending time with some of the great men and women who have helped to keep this country free, why not visit the annual Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home Resource Fair tomorrow?
From 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., the Vets Home will be busy with activity. A variety of our local businesses will host booths to give veterans and the public information on the services and products they provide; LifeShare Blood Centers will host a blood drive; plenty of snacks and food will be available for purchase; and veterans will be selling their handmade crafts.
Veterans are special members of society and in Jeff Davis Parish, our veterans are no exception. Sometimes we wonder what we can do to give back to our veterans. The truth is, attending events like Friday’s Resource Fair is a start.
The money raised Friday benefits the veterans so they can continue to enjoy events and activities offered in their home. From arts and crafts supplies to sponsoring different games veterans enjoy, the $2 you might spend on a snack at the fair really does give back to your community. You can also enjoy visiting with the many veterans who are always open to meeting a new friend.
Whether you can make it that day or not, consider becoming involved with the veterans in another way. The Vets Home is always looking for individuals who would like to volunteer their time to make veterans lives better. Maybe volunteering will find you sitting with a group of veterans as they trade stories from their time in service or what Jeff Davis Parish was like in their youth. Maybe volunteering will find you gardening, fishing or playing cards with veterans.
Whatever it finds you doing, you will be giving back to the same people who helped to make this nation a success.
