HHS dedicates gym in honor of longtime educator

Current and former Hathaway High School (HHS) students, family and friends gathered Monday afternoon to formally dedicate their gymnasium in honor of their former principal of 26 years, educator and basketball coach, Charles F. Groth.
Groth died at the age of 93 in 2006 and would have turned 100 on Nov. 18 of this year. He graduated from Elton High School in 1930, followed by a graduation from Louisiana Technical College in 1934. From 1935-1942, he served as a teacher and coach at Lake Arthur High School; worked as a math teacher, coach and principal at Elton High from 1942-1945; then served as a principal and math teacher at Hathaway from 1945-1971 before his retirement. He is said to have remained an active figure at Hathaway High.
