Rice Festival names Farmer of the Year
CROWLEY – Gerald “Jerry” Leonards Jr. of Roberts Cove has been chosen as the Rice Farmer of the Year for the 2012 International Rice Festival slated for the weekend of October 19-21, 2012 in downtown Crowley as announced by Brady Williams, festival president.
Leonards, an Acadia Parish farmer, is the son of Shirley Nickel Leonards and the late Gerald Leonards. He is married to the former Karen Pousson and is a fourth generation farmer that was born and raised on the farm. He started his tractor driving experience at the young age of nine on a Minneapolis Moline 60 horse power tractor with a pull type mower. Leonards continued to learn and work alongside his father. After graduating high school and attending college the demands of the farm pulled him back and he was more than willing to aid his ailing father in all the day to day farming aspects.
