Never stop seeking the truth

The Way I See It

by DON WEST

I stood outside on our deck in the pre-dawn hours one morning this week, enjoying my morning coffee and watching the moon nestled among the clouds thinking, “If only I could put that on canvas.” Of course, in nearly the same instant, I had to admit that I have never had a paintbrush in my hand with the exception of a few “paint by numbers” attempts when I was a young child. It’s one of those things that I have told myself that I would do in my retirement years, but yet haven’t found the time or drive to make that happen.

While admiring God’s canvas, I had to realize that attempting to match his paintbrush is fruitless, for He is the ultimate artist, the ultimate sculptor, the ultimate designer. Though many have created beautiful pieces on canvas, those are only the results of the gifts given to some from The Teacher. I have images in my mind, memories of travels throughout much of the world, visions that have remained with me until that day when I attempt to re-create that thought with brush and paint.

Since my mind is never far away from the political and social mess we have created in this country, I had to admit to myself that my rants and those of others on the opposite side of the fence are just that – rants. The liberal media, the ACLU, and others who actually think that they can remove God from our lives by pressuring the politicians to pass a few laws that they deem to be conflicts of church and state, is as ludicrous as me thinking that I can somehow duplicate the beauty that God has created in this world. Some of the pro-choice people believe that because we, as Christians, make choices that go against the teachings of Christ, the simple thought that “everyone is doing it” would somehow make it right. The foolish idea that this column would somehow sway a dyed-in-the-wool liberal to change their thinking is also my folly.

When I hear the media say that the ACLU would like all crosses removed from public property, I picture Arlington National Cemetery and cemeteries throughout this land and wonder if there are some who are foolish enough to believe that could ever happen. As we approach the November election, the battle rages between opponents, as if we think that one or the other will sway us, the great unwashed of this country, to change from our wicked ways and somehow right this sinking ship we call America.

We, as humans, have long ago plotted our future, and our refusal to live the lives of a loving and caring people, instead choosing self-indulgence over the needs of our fellow man, is a bell that will never be unrung. Grace and mercy are the hope of some, but truthfully, it seems that those are few and far between. Most don’t seem to care to even seek that which is our only salvation.

It has been said, “The truth will set you free.” Finding truth in this world, beyond the scriptures, is nearly impossible. Never stop seeking the truth, but remember, it begins with you and me.
