Rams edge Dogs in close contest

Captains: Captains were seniors Jarquis Brown and Johnny Hebert.

Coin Toss: The Dogs lost the coin toss for the sixth time this season.

Big Hit: Tight end Curtis Bell delivered a big lick on Westlake Rams defender David Victory early in the second quarter.

Good Call: The Bulldogs went for it on fourth and less than a yard from their 44. They moved the chains to keep the drive alive and put points on the board right before halftime.

Big Play: Westlake converted a third and 22 from their 25-yard line. They completed a 34-yard pass to fuel their winning scoring drive.

Longest Drive: The Bulldogs’ first scoring drive covered 70 yards with Jarquis Brown scoring on the 13th play of the drive from six yards out.

Short Drive: The Rams took advantage of the Bulldogs’ third turnover of the game. They drove 16 yards for their second score of the game to knot it up at 14.

Longest Pass: Bulldog quarterback Jaylon Boutte and wide receiver Malik Williams hooked up on a 38-yard scoring play with eight seconds left in the first half.

Longest Run: Charlie Matte had a 20-yard run in the second frame.

Longest Return: Jarquis Brown returned a kickoff 32 yards.

Wild Ram: Westlake showed the Bulldogs the Wild Ram on the second play of the game. They were very successful running the ball out of the Wild Ram.

First Downs: Jennings and Westlake both had 14 first downs.

Third Down Conversions: The Bulldogs converted seven of 12 third down attempts and Westlake made 6 of 12.

Fourth Down Conversions: The Dogs were one for four and the Rams were successful on their only attempt.

Turnovers: The Bulldogs lost the turnover battle four to two. Jennings lost three fumbles and had one interception. The Dogs intercepted two Ram aerials. Brandon Hayes and Keagan Deaville both registered an interception.

Punts: Jennings punted twice with a 32-yard average and Westlake punted four times for a 37-yard average.

Penalties: Jennings was penalized three times for 15 yards and Westlake was penalized eight times for 82 yards.

Series: Jennings leads the series 26-18-3.

Streaks: The Bulldogs have lost their last two games.

Pupil vs. Teacher: Head Ram Shawn Demeritt got his coaching start as a Bulldog assistant for Coach Rusty Phelps. Demeritt was also a member of the 1992 state championship team.

On Deck: The Bulldogs have their first Thursday night game of the season. They will travel to Crowley for a district 4-3A fray.

Congratulations: Congrats to Coach Chad Lavergne and his Lake Arthur Tigers on their big district win over rival Welsh. They are now in a three-way tie for first with Kinder and Welsh. Also, congrats to Coach Doyle Carter and the Elton Indians on their district win over Hamilton Christian.

Seeing Pink: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Happy Birthday: Happy Birthday to George Bonin. How many is that, Georgie?

Drew Brees: The Melissa Doise Hope for a Miracle Breast Cancer Foundation is raffling off a Drew Brees autographed, framed jersey he wore in action. The future hall of famer broke hall of famer Johnny Unitas’s 52 year-old record of consecutive games with a touchdown pass in the Saints last game, at 48 games. Tickets are available at Jeff Davis Bank, Main St. Broussard’s Cleaners, Jennings Credit, and the Tupper Museum.

Peace, Love, Dove: The buzzards have left Tiger stadium for at least a week and the sky is filled with doves after the Tigers defeated Darth Visor and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Now on to Aggie Land.

Week Seven,  1939: Jennings  7,   Lake Charles Wildcats  6

Week Seven,  1962: Jennings 6,    Opelousas Tigers  0: The Dogs won a close one in a defensive struggle.

Week Seven,  1987:  Jennings  14,  Carencro Bears  25: Stevie Van Hook and Tevis Abraham hooked up for two touchdowns on a seven-yard and six-yard pass to account for the Bulldogs’ two touchdowns.

Week Seven,  2002:  Jennings  27,  Wes,tlake Rams  19: Kedrick Ethridge led the Dogs with three touchdowns. He had an 18-yard run, 22-yard interception return, and a 49-yard kickoff return for scores. For good measure he caught a pass from Joe Greise for a two-point conversion. John Solari returned a punt 66 yards for the other touchdown. Mario Rideaux had a fumble recovery and Courtland Sinegal had an interception. Ethridge finished the night with two picks.

65 & 65: The class of 1965 will be hosting a birthday Friday night, Oct. 27, as they celebrate their 65th birthdays. The party will be held at the Jennings Country Club beginning at 7 p.m. All classes of the ‘60’ and 70’s are urged to attend to catch up on old times. Everyone from all classes is invited to help celebrate this special occasion.
