The Christ of Today
Dear Editor,
“He started from Galilee and now He is here,” from Luke 23:5 (MOFFATT).
Why did the sacred fires of Greece die out when Jesus came? Why did the cross of Calvary prove stronger than the throne of the Caesars? The answer is clear. Christianity is the revelation of God the incarnate.
Let us take a further step and say that Christ is here to change the moral climate of our world by changing the lives of men and women.
Our mad, senseless regime, our economic injustice, our “poverty” in the midst of plenty, and our stupidity in dealing social blindness and personal corruption.
But the unwise wisdom of the world has attacked the major social problems from the wrong end. Life under God was not meant to be a competitive struggle, not a bitter trough for men and nations to feed.
Therefore, improvement is not so much a matter of changed systems as it is of changed souls, not, legislation as it is radical regeneration.
Through Christ, the weight of law is changed into wings of love and freedom.
In Florence, there is a statuary by Michaelangelo that was done so that you can see a human figure, a glimpse of what looked like a human, trying to free itself from the marble mass. But the struggle is in vain, only one liberator, Christ, can set up free from our incomplete life.
This still is only freedom from release can never be an end, but only a means. You still do not have a purpose or a direction.
But the living Christ is here to give direction, as well as freedom to our lives, and how desperately we need it. Our modern world has lost their sense of direction because we have lost our sense of direction.
Even religion is not exempt form this fate, we have a lot of “Christian Activity,” but again no direction. This kind of reminds me of a horseman who mounts his steed, takes off in a direction without pattern, purpose, disciplined desire and a sense of direction. There is not guarantee of successful Christian living.
In closing, Jesus, the Christ is the way, the truth, he leads the kingdom of God.
And now he is here!
