We can fight it together
If you read today’s story on page one, you were probably thinking the Jennings Daily News never stops writing about the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay for Life. Well, that’s because people never stop being diagnosed with cancer.
Just today in Louisiana, 58 people will be told they have some type of cancer. That number might not seem like a lot – but when you consider that averages 290 new cases each week, there’s a good chance one of those diagnoses will be given to your friend, relative, co-worker or neighbor.
In fact, the person receiving the diagnosis just might be you.
The ACS is a true tool in providing a number of services and support to cancer patients and their families. And when Jeff Davis locals raise money every April during Relay for Life, that money does stay at home.
Some of the proceeds are added to monies collected from other Relays throughout the state. Those funds are then turned over to schools like Tulane and LSU-Shreveport to perform research into combating and curing cancer.
But the rest of those funds remain in Southwest Louisiana. It might come to a local cancer patient in the form of a fuel card that helps them get back and forth for doctors’ appointments and treatments. The money might provide lodging for a patient and their family that must travel a great distance for treatments.
There really are so many forms of support that are funded by what the caring people of this parish do.
This is why we challenge you to get involved, for the sake of your community and those you love. Relay does take work, but even more than that, it brings people together and provides a support system for those battling cancer and those who still grieve for those they lost to the disease.
Maybe you are a business owner who would like to sponsor the event. Maybe you and a group of co-workers and friends can form a team and do something as simple as a bake sale or car wash to raise funds. You can even make a donation to one of the teams already signed up for the event.
But whatever you do, please get involved. What you will do will make an amazing difference in the lives of so many people around you.
