Spread Christmas cheer to American heroes

As you start making your Christmas shopping lists, jotting down gifts to buy for family, friends and co-workers, add another person as a recipient: U.S. service members.

So many of our men and women in uniform will not be home for the holidays due to assignments that take them across the nation and globe. It’s hard for anyone to be away from loved ones at Christmas time; imagine what it would be like to be surrounded by strangers in a foreign land, surrounded by weapons, cots and tents.

The American Red Cross has a wonderful program that enables us all to not only say ‘thank you’ to a soldier, but also ‘merry Christmas.”

If you visit www.redcross.org, you can find a link that gives access to the organization’s 2012 Holiday Giving Catalog. The online catalog provides a number of gift options for soldiers stationed overseas; wounded warriors recovering in a hospital; and injured heroes returning home from service.

Those gifts include $20 phone cards that help connect a soldier far from home with loved ones; $50 military comfort kits that provide a robe, shower shoes, toothpaste, an MP3 music gift card and more to brighten a soldier’s stay in a hospital; and a $75 Red Cross caregiver training course that helps provide family and friends with the confidence and skills needed to care for a wounded warrior being welcomed home.

Many of us look for ways to help others during the holiday season. What better way to spread the Christmas spirit than giving to a stranger who is also an American hero?
