Christmas Bird Count hits area tomorrow

Daily News Staff Report

LACASSINE – The 2012 Lacassine NWR-Thornwell Christmas Bird Count will see its 11th year tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 14.

The one-day census covers a 15-mile circle centered approximately three miles south of the community of Thornwell.  The approximately 176-square mile area extends from Lake Arthur on the east to Hayes on the west and includes portions of Jeff Davis, Cameron and Calcasieu parishes. The landscape consists mostly of rice agriculture but also includes portions of the Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge, Lacassine Bayou and the Mermentau River/Lake Arthur. The count typically attracts 20-30 observers who are divided into groups assigned to cover about a dozen sections of the circle.
