Reader Shares Views on Litter Control
Dear Editor,
I wish to thank a local merchant for their efforts to help control litter displays across our parishes. Handing out paper bags instead of plastic in an effort to stymie litter was more costly for them.
This effort was a disappointment since it didn’t catch on with other merchants or the public.
I frankly do not know what would catch on since our law enforcement, parish-wise, state-wise, and community-wise, does not seem to be interested in putting a stop to the litter that lines our roadways.
When we had an opportunity to travel in the bread basket of this nation this fall, my wife and I noticed the cleanliness of the states we traveled through.
Moving to a smaller neighborhood seems to make the problem of litter more noticeable, I guess.
All of the above is not of intelligent design nor does it reflect an emphasis on cleanliness in our education of the younger folks. It seems like cleanliness sadly belongs to a bygone era and has no importance in our time.
Sincerely,
Dick Waltrip
