School board joins oil spill suit

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board is joining other governmental agencies from across the state in a suit that seeks to recoup lost tax revenues after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April 2010.

Jeff Davis Parish District Attorney Michael Cassidy, who also serves as the School Board’s attorney, said the board was recently contacted by attorney Russell Stutes, Jr., with Stutes and Lavergne, LLC., of Lake Charles, who will be representing a number of government bodies seeking restitution for lost revenues connected with the oil spill.

“As a result of that spill, BP has offered billions of dollars for businesses and individuals who were affected,” Cassidy said. Stutes believes taxing bodies are owed funds from the spill, too, he added, because so many companies affected saw a drop in revenue, which meant sales tax revenues dropped, as well.
