LAKE ARTHUR – Rising waters are already causing problems here and conditions are not likely to improve as the Mermentau continues to rise and rains keep moving into the area.

That was the theme of an emergency meeting held Saturday morning at the town’s Community Center, where residents packed the facility to standing-room only. In addition to Lake Arthur officials and members of the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office, representatives from the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP), the National Weather Service and the United States Coast Guard were in attendance.

Lake Arthur Mayor Robert Bertrand said the town has already seen a foot of rain and could expect more. As of press time Saturday, the Mermentau River was expected to crest late that night or early today. Bertrand said the town could expect possibly another foot of water to come into the town.
