Preparation, generosity helped JDP during flood
We have spent so much time covering the flood situation in our coverage area that we felt it was time to give credit where credit is due.
Elected and appointed officials seldom get praise for decisions or tasks but many in Jeff Davis Parish have gone above and beyond in the past weeks.
Especially in the southern portion of the parish, when rains began two weeks ago, officials and town crews were in the streets looking for potential problems, warning residents of when and where to expect flooding, and preventing flood problems as best as they could. They were also eager to contact this newspaper and utilize social media in an attempt to get all updates out as quickly as possible. Each day, there seemed to be a wealth of information available to residents, which truly helped this area both prepare for and endure a flood.
Our law enforcement officers also stayed quite busy in floodwaters, wind, rain and cold. The men and women working for a number of area agencies did amazing work helping vehicles out of high tides, putting up barricades, helping citizens evacuate, controlling traffic in flooding areas and so much more. It has been a tough job performed in difficult circumstances but the work those people put forth cannot go unnoticed.
Town employees and volunteers also played an incredible part during this flood, especially in Lake Arthur. People took the time to leave their own homes in hopes of protecting someone else’s. They placed sandbags throughout Lake Arthur, added clay to levees for added protection and helped pump water back into the lake as it seeped through levees. We would have all understood if these people decided to stay in their homes or evacuate but volunteering to help protect an entire community is quite an admirable decision.
We have much respect and appreciation for all who worked to help the parish, communities and people affected by the recent flooding. Thank you for dedicating your time to preparing and protecting this area as the water rose.
