The parish is asking the state for help with flood protection after high waters flooded many areas along the Mermentau River Basin in January.

The Jeff Davis Police Jury introduced a resolution asking the state to install weirs to release the floodwaters, as well as to repair the gate at the Catfish Locks in Mermentau. Juror John Marceaux said they hope this will reduce the chances of similar flooding in the future.
