Some stories bring joy, strength to community
If you read a newspaper or watch the evening news each day, you know good news is hard to come by. No reporter truly enjoys reporting on tragedies and scandals; no reader or viewer enjoys seeing all the bad things happening in this world.
Sometimes, though, a story comes along that reminds you there is still so much good in the world. Sometimes you meet individuals who make you smile simply by being themselves.
Over the past two weeks, the Jennings Daily News staff has been smiling right along with our area readers, as well as people from across the state, country and, yes, even the world. There are two key individuals who have made us smile and touched our hearts with the story of their friendship.
Jennings youth Blaize Richard, 18, and Jennings Police Department (JPD) Lt. Mike Hill have become celebrities since Richard’s mom used social media to share the story of their friendship. You know the heartwarming story by now: Blaize, who lives with autism and mental disabilities, has always wanted to be a police officer. His mom reached out to the JPD and Hill answered the call, going above and beyond, giving Blaize law enforcement experience he would otherwise never have received. In conjunction with the rest of the JPD, as well as the Jennings Fire Department, Blaize has so far ridden along during short patrols of the city; cuffed a bad guy during a mock arrest; and, as of Saturday, was named the JPD’s first Honorary Police Officer.
Blaize truly does have a passion for law enforcement. If you have been blessed to meet him, not only is he funny, kind and caring, but he also speaks with such excitement about his “work” with the JPD. He believes officers are strong, upstanding citizens who help those in need, and that is what he wants to be, too.
But Blaize already is one of this city’s strongest, most upstanding citizens, and his desire to help others, and his zeal over his JPD opportunities, have reminded us all that dreams do come true.
The Jennings Daily News salutes JPD Honorary Officer Blaize Richard, Lt. Mike Hill, and everyone who has been involved in some way in this amazing journey that we have been privileged to document.
