Relay offers two ways to honor cancer patients
By SHEILA SMITH
Organizers with the Jeff Davis Parish (JDP) Relay for Life are urging locals to make a difference in fundraising efforts by purchasing luminaries and Torches of Hope in honor of loved ones who have faced cancer.
Part of the fundraising for Relay for Life comes from the sale of luminaries, simple white bags that are used to honor cancer survivors and patients. A Torch of Hope, a wicker torch that features an engraved nameplate in a loved one’s honor, is also available. Relay volunteers fill each bag with a little sand for weight, followed by a single candle. On Relay night, which falls this year on Friday, April 19, at the Lake Arthur Beach, the luminaries will line the boardwalk. During a special luminaria ceremony, supporters light the candles, and the luminaries light the Relay path.
