Welsh opts out of LEPA project

By SHEILA SMITH

WELSH – The Board of Aldermen here voted to opt out of being one of the municipalities to financially back an upcoming Louisiana Energy and Power Authority (LEPA) plant in Morgan City.

The decision, Town Superintendent Rick Matte explained, does not mean Welsh is no longer affiliated with LEPA. Welsh sells its own electricity but LEPA acts as an agent in acquiring that energy. Matte explained that Welsh goes through LEPA to buy electricity at wholesale costs through Entergy, then sells that power to residents, which will continue to be done.
