Commission awaiting opinion from state

The Jeff Davis Parish Sanitary Landfill Commission is still looking into the legality of the landfill’s operator charging different waste fees for themselves than other disposal companies.

At a regular meeting in March, Parish Disposal Industries (PDI) co-owners Bill Pousson, J. DeRosier and Harold Barber asked commission members to look into the pricing of gate fees by the landfill’s contracted operator, Republic Services, formerly Allied Waste (BFI). The three said they felt the practice of charging themselves less than other companies could place Republic Services in violation of U.S. Sherman Antitrust Act, a measure passed by Congress in 1890 that prohibits certain business activities that federal government regulators deem to be anticompetitive.
