EUNICE – It is with great sadness that the family of Gussie Smith announces her passing on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas at the age of 88.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. today Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Eunice. Rite of Committal followed in St. Paul Cemetery in Elton with Father Cedric Sonnier, Celebrant.
At the request of the family, visitation was held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Eunice on Monday, April 22, 2013, from 2-9 p.m. and again today, Tuesday, April 23, 2013, from 8 a.m. until time of services. Deacon David Guillory recited a rosary at 6 p.m. Monday evening.
Gussie was a homemaker and businesswoman. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and traveling. She was the owner and operator of Smith Grocery Store in Hathaway, where she enjoyed meeting and getting to know many people of the community.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She touched the heart and soul of everyone she met. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Gail Smith Medus and husband Paul of Opelousas; her sister, Theresa Fall of Orange, Texas; and her granddaughter, Chassity Medus (Ben) Leger of Grand Coteau/Sunset; her greatest loves, her two grandchildren, Asa and Abigail Leger; her goddaughter and niece, Peggy Ann Fall of Orange, Texas; her godson and nephew, Philip Bellow of Wooster, Ohio; her nephews, Lanston Wayne Fall of Orange, Texas, Lloyd James Bellow of Houston, Texas, and Steven and Larry Cormier, both of Eunice; her niece, Lisa Ann Bellow Seneca of New Iberia; and numerous great- nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Smith; her parents, Theodule and Martha Andrepont Cormier; her brother, Joseph Rodgers Cormier; her sister, Lillie Mae Cormier Bellow; and her great-niece, Misty Layne Smitherman.
