School boards to appeal ruling

Assistant Editor

The Jeff Davis Parish (JDP) School Board will join others across the state in appealing a decision regarding the Louisiana School Employee Retirement System.

JDP and other boards filed a lawsuit against the state retirement system, according to JDP Superintendent of Schools David Clayton, because the constitution says the state is responsible for paying portions of employees’ retirement costs. Clayton recently said the school board is paying $2.7 million more a year now than five years ago for retirement costs, which has led to cost-cutting measures.
