Eunice Camille Edwards Johnson
NATCHITOCHES – Mrs. Eunice Camille Edwards Johnson, ‘Ms. Camille’, journeyed home peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2013, in Welsh, where she lived near her daughter and son-in-law, Lucille and Paul Dennis Matthews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013, at First Baptist Church at 1116 Amulet St. in Natchitoches, with Rev. Michael Callahan, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the Catholic Cemetery.
Viewing will be held at the church on Friday, June 21, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
She was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Natchitoches. She received her formal education at Natchitoches Parish Training School. She was a dedicated worker at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches until her retirement after 25 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucius (Bubba) Johnson Jr., her mother, Almerle Washington Remo; her stepfather, Phillip Remo; her father, Eli Edwards; her stepmother, Effie Edwards; and two sisters, Sallye Ann Edwards Pierce and Louise Helen Edwards. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Leonard, and a grandson, Gerard Matthews.
Ms. Camille, affectionately known as “Madear” by her children, accepted Christ at the age of 12 and was baptized and united with the First Baptist Church on North Street in Natchitoches. In later years she joined First Baptist Church on Amulet Street where she was a faithful and active member for years. She taught vacation Bible school and sang in the senior choir until her health restricted her activities.
She was a devoted wife to her husband, Lucius Johnson Jr., for 57 years. From that union she leaves to cherish her memory, eight children: Luella Rivers of Monroe, Lucille (Paul Dennis) Matthews of Welsh, Grace (Joe) Farley of Pittsburg, Texas, Yvonne Johnson (Middleton) of Tampa, Fla., Betty (Willie) Thrash of Plano, Texas, Audrey (Donald) Johnson (Johnson) of Milwaukee, Wisc., Lucius (Kathy) Johnson III of Roswell, Georgia, and Daryl (Kim) Johnson of Chicago, Ill.; 23 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; one niece, Cynthia Pierce King of Natchitoches; two nephews, Floyd (Laurie) Pierce Jr. of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Michael Eagle of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
