Harold Jay Maris
It is with great sadness that the family and friends of Harold Jay Maris announce his passing from this life on June 6, 2013, while in the comfort of his home in Mermentau surrounded by his beloved family who he loved so dearly. Harold was 81 years old.
A Mass of Christian burial to celebrate Harold’s life will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Mermentau on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at 10 a.m. He will be laid to eternal rest in St. John the Evangelist Cemetery where he will be honored with full military rites. Father Neil McNeil will officiate.
Visitation will be held for Harold at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings on Monday, June 10, 2013, from 3 p.m. until the time of his funeral mass on Tuesday at 10 a.m. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Monday.
Harold Jay was born in Johnson, Kansas, to the late Albert Maris and the late Elma Coleman Maris on May 22, 1932. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force, earning the prestigious title of Master Sergeant. Harold devoted his life to serving and protecting this great country until his retirement in 1972. He enjoyed working at the VFW in Lake Arthur and doing crossword puzzles.
Harold is survived by his beloved wife, Shelby Godeaux Maris of Mermentau; his four sons, Gordon (Stacy) Maris of Jennings, Markham, Shawn and Jacob Maris, all of Mermentau; one daughter, Jacqueline (Phillip) Richard, also of Mermentau; a brother, Albert Maris Sr. of Garden City, Kansas; and his 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Elma C. Maris; one daughter, Diana Miller; and a brother, Donald Lee Maris.
Carrying Harold to this eternal resting place will be Markham, Gordon, Shawn, Jacob, Justin and Michael Maris. Honorary pallbearers will include Jacob Lege, Shawn Maris Jr., Mark Anthony Morvant, Tyrone Maris and Andrus Maris.
