Gail was born Feb. 3, 1958, in Crowley, and was a resident of Jennings. Gail graduated from Crowley High School in 1976 and received her RN degree from LSU-Eunice. She began her nursing career at the American Legion Hospital in Crowley and worked at Hamilton Hospital Lafayette, then began her 10-year career at Lafayette General. After Hurricane Rita, Gail worked for Volunteers of America where she met many wonderful people and made many close friends who stood by her and helped her during her illness. Gail’s love for helping others to feel beautiful led her to a brief career with Jolie Allure in Jennings. She was most recently employed at MD HomeCare Network in Jennings.
Gail loved people, life, giving of herself, learning, teaching and healing, gardening, dancing, exercising and sports. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines and served on the board of the Jennings Little Theater where she also enjoyed acting. But most of all she loved her family and her friends.
Her beautiful smile lit up every room she entered and her very presence gave others a sense of peace and love. She was our “sunshine”. She will be deeply and forever missed. Special thanks to Barney Paul, Lana and Colton Johnson for their loving and constant care of Gail during the past few weeks; her dear friend, Sue Feutch, who spent countless days with Gail during her lengthy illness; Emily Stoma, Janice Leleux and the Crowley High School Class of 1976, and to Rev. Grady Brittain and the members of the First United Methodist Church, where Gail was a lifelong member.
Gail is survived by her husband, Mike Simar of Jennings; her mother, Frankie M. Johnson of Crowley; one sister, Diane Johnson (Milton) Ourso of Baton Rouge; one brother, Paul (Missy) Johnson of Baton Rouge; five stepchildren, Michael, Jacob, Andrea, Geoffrey and Kari; one niece, Kristi Johnson (Matthew) Rojas of Baton Rouge; four nephews, Barney Paul (Lana) Johnson of Walker, Stephen Johnson of Lake Charles, Jay Johnson of Lafayette, and Brandon Johnson of Baton Rouge; and one great-nephew, Colton Johnson of Walker.
She was preceded in death by her father, Oscar Johnson; and one brother, Ray Johnson.
Pallbearers will be Barney Paul Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Jay Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Colton Johnson and Matthew Rojas. Honorary pallbearers will be Murray Morgan, Frank Cooper, Geoffrey Wolfe and Joe Durham.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church, 321 East Third Street, Crowley, LA 70526, in Gail’s memory.
