Thank you and goodbye, Jeff Davis
by ALLISON CRYER
As some of you may already know, today is my final day working for the Jennings Daily News, as I will be leaving the warm embrace of my hometown community to pursue a new career in Austin, Texas, this July.
Because this is the last time that I will be writing in this space, I would like to take the time to say thanks to the community that has given me so much over the last several years.
When I decided to move back home in 2010 and return to my hometown of Jennings, I would have never guessed that this experience would change me as much as it has. Through my work and the friendships I have made in the community of Jeff Davis, I was able to not only learn lessons about myself, but about life in general.
I want to thank all of you who gave me the opportunity to share your stories, as it has given me a rare glimpse at the strength of the human spirit and renewed sense of hope for our society.
I will miss the crawfish boils, Rocket burgers and actually being able to view the stars in the night sky. I will also miss the long drives through the rural areas of the parish where there is nothing but nature for miles, and you can see the where the sky separates from the earth on the horizon.
But most of all, I will miss the incredible people I have met during my stay in Jeff Davis. I have had the fortunate opportunity to meet so many interesting and inspiring people, and my life has been enhanced by these experiences.
From working as a deckhand on a shrimp boat and watching the sun set on the Gulf, to weekly jam sessions with the Attaboys, who have become lifelong friends, I will never forget my time here.
As I drive down the same streets that I once cruised down on a bike as a kid, I know that there is something special about this place and it will always be home to me.
Of course, I can’t take my entire family with me to Austin, and I am sure I will be back in town to visit for holidays and vacations, so don’t think you won’t be seeing me again.
As I move on to the next leg in my journey, I know I will be stronger, smarter and more confident thanks to the lessons, love and support I received while being a part of this community. For that, I would like to say goodbye and thanks for having me, Jeff Davis. I wish you all the best.
