Two years ago the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana received a grant to install two 6,300 sq ft, hydroponic greenhouses. The plan was for one of the greenhouses to produce tomatoes while the other was for the production of lettuce. After two full crops, both the lettuce and tomato operations have been a success; therefore, the tribe decided to implement the second phase of the plan, which is to double the size of the tomato operation. This has put the total square footage of the operation just under half an acre.
Currently, the tomato operation boasts 1,600 plants in harvest stage. By next spring, 3,200 plants will be in production.
