George Demarest, 93, of Welsh, passed away peacefully on Aug. 5, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. He was born Sept. 7, 1919, in Welsh.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at Hixson Funeral Home of Welsh.
Visitation will begin today, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, from 4-9 p.m. and will resume on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 8 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings.
George served in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from Jeff Davis Parish Road Works Department. He was a rice farmer and raised cattle for his family. He was a well-respected man of the community. He enjoyed visiting others and telling stories of old times.
George had a strong belief in Jesus Christ and was a great spiritual leader for his family. Along with his wife, Hazel, they influenced many lives.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Hazel Cormier Demarest; his sons, Eugene (Debbie) Demarest, Allen (Bernetta) Demarest, Randy Demarest, all of Welsh, and Jr. (Dorothy) Cormier of Jennings; and his daughters, Betty (C.C.) Spell and Carole (Bob) Cormier, both of Welsh. He was blessed with 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren; one aunt, Allie Ardoin of Monroe; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Tousin Demarest and Rufus Demarest; a sister, Allia Fontenot; his oldest son, Raymond Demarest; and his great great-granddaughter, Kaylex Wilson.
He was well loved and will be missed by many. We were blessed to have him here for all those years. Heaven just got a little brighter with him walking the streets of gold.
Pallbearers will be Todd Spell, Dwayne Wilson, Cody Demarest, Brandt Poole, Nathan Spell and Mason Hebert.
