From civil rights to city council
Jennings native recalls life as an activist

In August 1963, Essie Bellfield boarded a bus in Orange, Texas, that was bound for Washington, D.C. There, she would join an estimated 300,000 Americans, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in the March on Washington that demanded better jobs and education for all people.
