Christmas bird count scheduled for Dec. 14

The 2013 edition of the Lacassine NWR-Thornwell Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will be conducted on Saturday, Dec. 14.  This will be the twelfth year of the count since being established in 1997, and the fifth consecutive year after the count was “revived” in 2009 following a five-year hiatus from 2004-2008.

The one-day census covers a 15-mile diameter circle centered approximately three miles south of the community of Thornwell.  The approximately 176 square mile area extends from Lake Arthur on the east to Hayes on the west and includes portions of Jeff Davis, Cameron and Calcasieu parishes.  The landscape is dominated by rice agriculture but also includes portions of Lacassine NWR, scenic Lacassine Bayou, and the Mermentau River/Lake Arthur. The count typically attracts 20-30 volunteer observers who are divided into groups assigned to cover about a dozen sections of the 176 square mile area of the circle.
