He was co-author of the book, “History of Lake Arthur”. Calvin was a founding member of his every Thursday “Lunch Bunch”, and of the C. & E. Investment Club.
Calvin was an avid tennis player into his late 70’s; and all his friends and family loved to hear him tell his famous Cajun jokes. He was devoted to his friends, children and grandchildren; but he was especially devoted to his wife, Sara, and enjoyed their travels together through the years; especially the annual beach trip with all the children and grandchildren which had taken place every year for 30 years.
Calvin is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Sara Oliver Smith, his children, Calvin Dale Smith, Jr. of Ottawa, Canada, and Deborah Smith Frame (David) and Donna Smith Bulliard (Marcel), both of Lafayette; his step-children, Virginia Erwin Sirera (Martin) of Mandeville, Margaret Erwin Manley (Nicholas) of Southaven, Miss., and Elizabeth Erwin Pillow (Chip) of Germantown, Tenn.; his special grandchildren, Sara McDiarmid, Christopher Bulliard, Philip Caronia, Jeff Bulliard, Alexis DeJean, Randall Bulliard, Calvin Frame, Zachary Sirera, Sara Grace Sirera, Susannah Sirera, Caroline Pillow, Carter Pillow, Sara Louise Manley, and Frances Manley; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emanuel Smith and Francis LeBlanc Smith, two brothers and two sisters.
The family wishes to thank Passages Hospice, especially Laurie Breaux and Jeannine McNeal for their loving care, and in particular Tim Rutledge who cared lovingly for Calvin the last months of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to John Calvin Presbyterian Church, or the Lake Arthur Branch Library of Jefferson Davis Parish, 600 4th St., Lake Arthur, LA 70549.
