Fun, affordable activities open to kids this summer
Summer has its perks and despite its sweltering heat, many of us look forward to the season for outdoor activities, vacations, special events and more. Summer time isn’t always fun, though, especially for parents seeking affordable, family-friendly events for their kids.
This summer, however, no one has to look far to keep area children busy.
The Jennings Daily News’ Community Calendar is featured in each edition of the newspaper and shares free or non-profit events hosted right here at home.
There is already a variety of activities being offered across the parish. The Summer Feeding Program kicked off last week and will run until late July, offering free breakfast, lunch and supper to qualifying children at a number of locations around Jeff Davis. The Jennings Elementary School site not only offers two meals daily but also provides many activities for young children and teens between 9-11 a.m.
The Jeff Davis Parish Libraries are also hosting weekly events around the parish, featuring live entertainment such as Harvey Rabbit and Friends and Geebo the Clown and activities like creative writing and gardening classes. The Carnegie Library in Jennings, meanwhile, offers an exciting summer program for both toddlers and older kids.
Vacation Bible schools are also taking place at several local churches throughout the summer. No matter their denomination, children have the opportunity to spend time in a positive environment filled with games and activities.
Plus, remember you and your kids have several places to choose from for fishing, swimming, boating, canoeing, hunting, or simply enjoying the sites. Spend time at the Lake Arthur Beach; visit Lorrain Bridge, the Lacassine Wildlife Refuge or the Lacassane Pool; fish, play or simply hang out at the many parks in Jennings and Welsh; or visit the Gator Chateau at the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park. There really is no shortage of affordable and free activities for kids this summer and more will soon be announced.
Summer doesn’t have to be boring or expensive. In Jeff Davis Parish, children can fill their school break with summer fun.
