Iris Hargroder, of Jennings, died on June 20, 2014, after a long bout with Alzheimer’s. She was 83 years old.
Iris graduated from Reserve High School in 1948 and was the 1950-1951 Sugar Queen. She married the recently deceased Dr. Joe Hargroder in 1952, and the couple relocated to Albuquerque, N.M. They relocated to Jennings in 1957 where Joe began his medical practice. Iris was the loving and cherished mother of five children. She was very involved in the community during her time in Jennings, including serving as a Pink Lady Volunteer, a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Ladies Altar Society. Iris enjoyed meeting with her lifelong friends at weekly events including Tuesday Rosary Group, Thursday Coffee Club and Saturday Dinner Club. Her beauty was only overshadowed by her kind heart and compassion for others.
Iris was born on Aug. 20, 1930, in LaPlace, to the late Elmore and Jean Millet.
She leaves behind five children; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; a son, Matt and wife Janet Hargroder of Scott, and grandchildren, Blake, Lacey and Nicholas; a son, Dr. Andrew (Drew) Hargroder and wife Renee of Baton Rouge, and grandchildren, Luke, Grace and Hannah; a daughter, Fara Hargroder and her husband Greg Miller of New Roads, and grandchildren, Alex and Geoffrey; a son, Paul (Joey) Hargroder and wife Kim of Jennings, and grandchildren, Colby and Carson; a son, John Hargroder and wife Linda of Park City, Utah, and grandchildren, Jessica, Aundrea and Adam; and a brother, E.J. Millet of LaPlace.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the Dr. Joe Hargroder Scholarship Fund for Jeff Davis Parish students who attend McNeese State University. Iris donated her body to science for medical research.
A memorial Mass of celebration of her life will be held in Jennings on July 20, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church.
