Wilmer Joseph Turner
Funeral services for Wilmer Joseph “WJ or Tonkey” Turner, 89, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Antioch Baptist Church in Lake Arthur. Pastor Micheal Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery under the direction of Fondel Memorial Chapel.
Wake service will be held today, Friday, June 6, 2014, from 5-9 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Turner died Saturday, May 31, 2014, in a Jennings hospital.
Born in New Iberia, he resided in Lake Arthur most of his life, where he was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and served as an ordained deacon, Sunday school superintendent, head usher and treasurer. He retired from law enforcement from the Lake Arthur Police Dept. and Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Dept. He was a World War II Army veteran, past First Commander of VFW in Lake Arthur and member/finance officer of the American Legion, along with being a member of the Masons.
He leaves to cherish his memory, five daughters, Wilma McZeal of Kinder, Brenda T. Harris of Houston, Texas, Rena (Ervin) Moses of Jennings, Darlene Turner and Madeline Turner, both of Lake Arthur; three sons, William (Jackie) of Lake Charles, Walter (Liz) of Atlanta, Ga., and Kerry (Stephanie) Turner of Lake Arthur; 60 grandchildren; 150 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marylene Turner; a daughter, Vida Mae Turner; and a son, Benny.
