Colleagues recall Smith’s legacy

He never met a stranger; that’s what his friends will remember about him. 

His affable nature and strong leadership helped Tommy Smith ascend from a substitute teacher in Lake Arthur in 1972, to superintendent of schools in Jeff Davis Parish 31 years later. Smith served the parish for 35 years in various capacities, but none more important than being a friend and guide to the people who needed it the most. His sudden death on Friday, July 11, at 62 has left those who worked with him reeling, but the memories of their co-worker and friend keep them going.
