<p>March 11-April 26 STC Head Start Roundup Save the Children Head Start will hold their Registration Roundup for Jennings and Elton March 11-April 26 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Parents should bring birth certificate, current shot records, income verification, insurance or Medicaid card and proof of residency. <p>March 16 River Fest Lake Arthur’s annual River Fest festival is being held on Saturday, March 15 at Lake Arthur Park. Registration for the car, truck and bike show starts at 9 a.m. at the park. <p>Dice Run Nanny’s Angels and 5 O-Clock Somewhere are hosting the Dice Run on Saturday March, 16 with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and kickstands up at 10 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Registration begins at the Lake Arthur American Legion. The stop will be at LA Bar where there will be an auction. The public is invited to attend. “Girl Talk” for Women Mallalieu United Methodist Church is hosting “Girl Talk” for women ages 18 and over on from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the church located at 1302 Peterson Street in Jennings. Door prizes will be given away and snacks will be served. Women can talk with other women from a biblical standpoint about issues they are facing. All women are invited and there is no charge to attend. Rider’s Club Rodeo Jeff Davis Rider’s Club announces rodeos to be held at 9 a.m. with books closing at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Crowley Rice Arena. The public is invited to attend. March Market Madness will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at First United Methodist Church Annex on N. Adams Street in Welsh. Specialty merchants and crafters will offer jewelry, baby bonnets, decorating items, purses, wreaths, aprons, children&#8217;s clothing, homemade foods, makeup, and more. Admission is $1 donation and $1 per ticket for merchandise drawings. Fees, admission charges and food/drink proceeds will benefit Jeff Davis Parish Relay for Life. Senior Citizen Health Fair<br />
The Jeff Davis Parish Senior Citizen Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. until noon Tuesday, March 26, at the Jennings Conference Center on State Street. It will have a Hawaiian luau theme. The event is open to all parish senior citizens. There will be several vendors on hand with blood pressure checks, screenings, etc. from area businesses. Plate lunches will be sold for $4. <p>Senior Citizen Luncheon<br />
Jeff Davis Living Center and Wellness Facility will host a free senior citizen luncheon on Wednesday, March 27, from 11 a.m. until at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2.7 miles north of the red light at the overpass on North Cutting Avenue in Jennings. <p>Christmas Wish program<br />
The Jennings Fire Department (JFD) is seeking donors and sponsors for its annual Christmas Wish Program. The program benefits children ages 12 and under only. For more information, call the JFD at 821-5507.</p>
<p>CADA Adopt a Family<br />
Communities Against Domestic Abuse&#8217;s (CADA) annual Adopt a Family program, which benefits women and children living in CADA&#8217;s local safe house, is seeking donors and sponsors until Friday, Dec. 7. Sponsors will be given wish lists of the family they adopt. People can also donate money or food to provide for families. Donors should have gifts to the CADA office no later than Wednesday, Dec. 12. <p>December 4 American Legion Meeting James O. Hall Post 19 of the American Legion will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 4, beginning at 6 p.m. The meeting will be conducted at the American Legion Hall located at 111 N. Market Street here in Jennings. The Post’s Ladies Auxiliary will also meet on the same date and at the same time and location. Any military veteran who is considering joining the Legion is invited to attend the Post’s meeting in order to find out more about this patriotic organization. Library Board Meeting A public meeting to review the 2013 budget for the Jeff Davis Parish Library Board will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at the McBurney Memorial Branch located at 301 South Sarah Street in Welsh. The regular board meeting will follow at 5 p.m. Tuesday.</p>
<p>December 5 Christmas Social Our Lady Help of Christians Altar Society is having their annual Christmas Social at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at the St. Mary Center. All members are invited and are asked to bring finger food. Members may also bring a guest.</p>
<p>Food Net Food Drive<br />
The annual Food Net Food Drive will be held from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Jeff Davis Parish Fairgrounds Arena in Jennings. All non-perishable items are needed. Last day to signup for Toys for Tots The last chance to signup to be a recipient of the Marine Corps annual Toys for Tots drive will be from 12-5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7 at the National Guard Amory located at 108 N. LHS Homecoming Lacassine High School is seeking graduates from the classes of 1943, 1953, 1963, 1973, 1983, 1993 and 2003 to participate in 2012-13 Homecoming Activities. The homecoming game is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 7., with an alumni reception scheduled for 5 p.m. upstairs in the new gym. The girls play at 6 p.m. and the boy’s game will follow. Second Saturday Flea Market The Second Saturday Flea Market will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park in Jennings. The monthly event allows local vendors to sell their wares. Booths set up at 6 a.m. and the market opens to the public at 7 a.m. until. All vendors are welcome to set up booths at the event for $5 per booth, and a donation of $1 per shopper is requested at the gate. All proceeds benefit Communities Against Domestic Abuse. <p>Relay for Life Fundraiser A fundraiser for the Acadia Parish American Cancer Society Relay For Life from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Mee Mee&#8217;s Café located at 330 S. Jackson Ave. in Morse. Jambalaya dinners will be sold for $7 each and there will be a live Auction. DJ Rosco, DJ Crak Louisiana Sounds, Pat Richard, Ronnie Matthews and Cajun Heat with special guest Colby Latiolais will provide music and entertainment throughout the day. The bracelets for entertainment will cost $10 each.<br />
Christmas on the Lake The town of Lake Arthur will host its annual holiday celebration, &#8220;Christmas on the Lake,&#8221; on Saturday, Dec. 8 starting with a gumbo cook-off at 12 p.m. with judging at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Miss Lake Arthur will be announced around 1 p.m., and a parade down Arthur Avenue will start at 6 p.m. with lineup beginning at 5 p.m. Immediately following the parade there will be a fireworks show. First Presbyterian Cantata<br />
The First Presbyterian Church of Welsh will hold its Christmas cantata, &#8220;Shout Out the Good News,&#8221; at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at the church&#8217;s home at 305 W. Hudspeth Street. The public is invited to attend.</p>
<p>Holiday Shopping Market The second annual Holiday Shopping Market in Welsh will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9 at the Welsh Community Center. All admission proceeds will benefit Welsh Christmas Basket Fund and can a donation of cash, canned goods, non-perishable foods or toiletry items. Bulk Trash Pickup Allied Waste will begin their monthly scheduled &#8220;white goods,&#8221; yard waste and bulky items trash collection on Monday, Dec. 10. <p>October 19 &#8211; November 30 Hathaway Little Dribblers Registration Hathaway Little Dribblers is now registering children for the 9-14 year old league. Only children registered in Hathaway School District are eligible to play. On Saturday, Nov. 3, students can register at the school’s gym from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The last day to register is Nov. 30. Forms can be picked up at the school or at Butchie’s Corner Store and can be mailed to the address on the form or given to any board member. St. Francis Art Campus<br />
St. Francis School in Iota will host an Art on Campus Student Session for school-aged students on Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 3-5 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Art supplies will be provided. Participants take home their masterpiece. Artwork will be a cross design using acrylic on canvas. Cost $35 and proceeds benefit the school. Painting session will be led by Brenda Joubert, artist and educator. Adult Session will paint a landscape using acrylics on canvas the same day from 6-8 p.m. Cost for adults is $40. <p>Chicken Salad Sandwich Sale<br />
The UMW of Jennings United Methodist Church is holding their annual chicken salad sandwich sale on Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The cost of a sandwich is $2. There will be baked goods and a white elephant sale. The sale will be in the church fellowship hall at the back parking lot. Church is located at 702 North Cary Avenue.</p>

LifeShare Blood Centers will host a blood drive from 12-5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Jennings American Legion Hospital.<br />

<p>November 10 Flag Retirement Ceremony The Live Oak Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution will be sponsoring a flag retirement ceremony at the Welsh Museum at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10 in commemoration of Veteran’s Day. American Legion Post 293 and VFW Post 9046 will be assisting scouts from Brownie Troop 72 and Cub Scout Pack 29 will the ceremony where they will earn their citizenship badge. The AARP Driver Safety Program will host a driving refresher class for Jeff Davis Parish on Nov. 12. Cost is $12 for AARP members (AARP card required) and $14 for non-members. Each person completing the class may receive up to three years in auto insurance savings (check with individual insurance carrier for verification) . <p>Benefit Poker Run<br />
A benefit poker will be held to raise money for the family of Julie Lyon Daigle who was killed in a car accident in April. Money raised will be used for funeral expenses and headstone. Registration will be at 9 a.m. at the Dirty Rice Saloon in Iowa, with the first bike out at 10 a.m. The last bike in will be at 2 p.m.. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and free food. The Crystal Creek band will be playing.<br />
Independence Day Boat Parade The Lake Arthur Boat Club will host its eighth annual Independence Day Boat Parade on Saturday, June 30. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the parade kicks off at 1 p.m. at the boat club and travels to Lake Arthur Park where judging will be held at 2 p.m. Trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m. for each category at the boat club. <p>Summer Feeding Program<br />
Children ages 1-18 years and any person over 18 who has been determined mentally or physically handicapped by a state educational agency and is enrolled in a private or nonprofit school program are invited to attend the Summer Feeding Program at the Jeff Davis Youth Community Center (old James Ward Elementary) on Wilbert D. Rochelle Avenue. Summer Feeding will run until July 23 (closed July 4). Free breakfast is provided each weekday from 8-9 a.m. and free lunch is provided from 11 a.m. until noon. Summer Reading Registration<br />
The Summer Reading Program at the Jennings Carnegie Library will be held June 7-July 12. Kids can register anytime from May 29-June 7. Storytime and activities will be every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for pre-k and younger and 2:30 p.m. for kindergarten through third grade students. For every 30 minutes a child reads during the program, they receive one reading dollar to spend in the Carnegie Dollar Store.</p>

<p>Spring Blood Drive Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will hold its annual Spring Blood Drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 3. <p>JHS Varsity Mini Camp<br />
The JHS Varsity Cheerleader Mini Camp will be held June 4-8 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day at the JHS gym. The camp is for ages 3 (must be potty trained) through junior high. Forms to pre-register will be sent home with K-6th grade students at all schools or may be obtained at the high school office. Registration will also be taken on the first day of camp. The cost for the camp is $35 (camp t-shirt is included in price).</p>

<p>June 11 Election Commissioner Training The Jeff Davis Clerk of Court’s office will hold a certification for anyone interested in becoming an election commissioner at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 11 at the multi-purpose building located on the parish fairgrounds. The certification is also for recertification of election commissioners and commissioners in charge. Election Commissioners can earn up to $200 per day. <p><strong>Rosary for Cancer</strong></p>
<p>This is an open invitation for everyone to join the local CDA Court to pray for all cancer victims. Living and decease luminary bags will be available for a $10 donation. All money collected will go to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. The event will be held Saturday, April 14, at 10 a.m. at the KC Hall in Welsh.</p>

<p><strong>Rabies/Microchipping Clinic</strong></p>
<p>The Town of Welsh will host a rabies and microchipping clinic for dogs Saturday, April 14, from 2-4 p.m. in the Welsh City Hall parking lot at 201 S. Elms Street in Welsh. Rabies shots are $10. All shots are $20. Microchipping will be $20 but only 50 microchips will be available. For more information, call 734-2231.</p>

<p><strong>Girl Scouts Barbecue</strong></p>
<p>Hathaway Girl Scout Troop 2217 will hold a barbecue chicken dinner fundraiser on Saturday, April 14, at the Jennings National Guard Armory. Eat in or pick up from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Dinners will include 1/4 barbecue chicken, rice dressing, and beans for $8. Baked goods will also be sold. An auction will be held at 1 p.m. All money raised will be used to fund a troop trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the Girl Scouts Rock the Mall 100th Anniversary Sing-along in June. <p><strong>Head Start Registration</strong></p>
<p>CDI Head Start will host a registration roundup at its Jennings Center at 306 South Lake Arthur Avenue April 16-20 and during the entire month of May, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Three and four year-old students are accepted but the student must be three by Sept. 30, 2012. Parents should bring a child’s birth certificate; current immunization (shot) record; income verification (preferably W-2 or 1040 forms); insurance or Medicaid card; and proof of residency (copy of utility bill).</p>

<p><strong>St. Francis Crawfish Boil</strong></p>
<p>St. Francis School in Iota will have a crawfish boil on Friday, April 20. It will be take out orders only. You may pick up orders between 5-7 p.m. at St. Francis School. Orders will be four pounds of boiled crawfish with potatoes for $15 each. You may purchase tickets from any St. Francis student or call the school at 779-2527 and leave a message, during the week of April 6-15. If extra crawfish is available the night of the event, the cost will be $17 per four-pound order. The sale will benefit the school.</p>

There will be prayers for those fighting the disease, their caregivers, and those who have lost their lives to cancer. Light refreshments will be served immediately following in St. Mary’s Center. Also, representatives from Relay for Life will be selling luminaries.</p>

Early Voting Period<br />
The early voting period for the March 24 presidential preference election is scheduled for March 10-17. Voters can cast their votes during the early voting period (excluding Sunday, March 11) at the parish Registrar of Voters office located at 302 N. Cutting Ave. in Jennings. The registrars of voters will open their offices from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for each day of early voting.</p>

Edolia Gordon Raffle<br />
A benefit raffle to help offset medical expenses for Edolia Gordon, who suffers from cancer, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, at 718 Orange Street in Jennings. Prizes include an ice cream maker, a waffle maker and a surprise money bag. Participants do not need to be present to win and monetary donations are welcomed. <p>Womanless Pageant Fundraiser<br />
The Acadia Parish Relay for Life team will host a womanless pageant fundraiser from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Gueydan Civic Center. There is no charge for contestants to participate but a form must be filled out. People ages 13 sand older may enter. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for kids 12 and under. James Ward Registration<br />
James Ward Elementary School will hold pre-K and new student registration from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 19-23, in the office.<br />
Students must be 4 years old by Sept. 30, 2012, to enter pre-K and must be 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2012, to enter kindergarten. Parents or guardians should bring the child&#8217;s birth certificate, social security card and immunization (shot) record to register. Students who are currently enrolled in pre-K at Ward do not need to re-register. Parents are not required to bring students to registration.</p>

River Fest<br />
The fifth annual River Fest will kick off Saturday, March 24, starting at 1 p.m. at Lake Arthur City Park. There will be music, food and fun for all ages. A Band Called River will close out the day&#8217;s music lineup at 7 p.m. A car, truck and bike show will also take place at park with registration at 9 a.m. Saturday, public judging at 11 a.m. followed by an award ceremony. LAES Roundup<br />
Lake Arthur Elementary will hold its annual pre-k and kindergarten roundup for the 2012-2013 year on Tuesday, March 27. Parents are to report to the LAES All-Purpose/Gym between 8:30 a.m. until noon with a copy of their child&#8217;s birth certificate, shot record and Social Security card. Parents are asked not to bring their children with them unless they have speech concerns. The speech therapist will be available to screen the children. There will be no vision and hearing screenings. School nurses will be checking shot records. To register for kindergarten, children must be five years old by Sept. 30, 2012. To register for pre-k, children must be four years old on or before Sept. 30, 2012. Parents should be prepared to give proof of residence if needed or required.</p>

The James O. Hall Post 19 of the American Legion will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 3, beginning at 6 p.m. The meeting will be conducted at the American Legion Hall located at 111 N. Each Saturday, rain or shine, the Main Street Farmers Market in Jennings is open from 7-10 a.m. in Founders Park. Some items available are fresh vegetables and produce, crafts, baked goods, fresh eggs, canned goods and more. To qualify as a vendor for the Main Street Farmers Market you must make, raise, or grow what you intend to sell.  No store bought or import items are allowed.  There is no fee to be a vendor, but you must fill out a participation form at the Farmers Market.
