Jennings Girls Claim Third in All-Star Tourneys

The Jennings Girls’ Philly II recreational softball team took two third-place finishes in All-Star tournaments so far this month, including the Mamou All-Star Tournament from June 7-9 and the Rayne All-Star Tournament from June 14-16. The 11-12-year-old girls’ team will return to the field this weekend to participate in Crowley’s Tournament.

Pony All-Stars continue season

The Jennings Pony All Stars won all three of their games on Saturday against Rayne, Vermillion A and Vermillion B in the Crowley Tune Up Tournament over the weekend, but were defeated by Delcambre in a 3-2 contest on Sunday.

Coaches for the Jennings team are Michael Benoit, Dusty Lantz, Keith Smith, and Ken Cassidy. Team members are Ryan Edmundson, Andrew Benoit, Colby Bonin, Garrick Fontenot, Isaac Lantz, Brant Smith, Nicholas Cassidy, Emile Stretcher, Baylor Ledbetter, Tanner Guinn, Will Green, David Daniel, and Brent Meche.

Flag football tourney, other events to be held

An “Average Flag Football Tournament” was recently held at Peters Street Park in Jennings and saw multiple teams throughout the area take the field for a fun time.

Hosted by local residents Doug Matthews, Bryce Jenkins and Marvin Williams, the event was “an attempt to bring some activity and positivity to the community,” said volunteer Terry Simon Jr., who reported that the event was quite positive.

Swim Clinic Held

The Jennings Aquadog Swim League (JASL) recently participated in a swim clinic at the Jennings city pool instructed by LSU swim coach Dave Geyer. Fourteen kids attended the clinic to learn many different swim techniques. The JASL’s annual swim meet will be held from June 21-22 to mark their 20th anniversary. The league is inviting any former swim team members or swim enthusiasts to attend and swim in the “old-timers’” race.

Teaching The Basics

The Jeff Moore Basketball camp was recently held at Lake Arthur High School and taught athletes basic and advanced skills of basketball according to his/her age and ability. Emphasis was placed on fundamentals with a great amount of personal instruction from the camp staff. Jeff Moore is the assistant coach at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches and is the son of former Lake Arthur High School coach, the late Wilbert C. “Nooky” Moore.

Razor tourney raises $5,200 for the local team

GUEYDAN – The Second Annual Razor Softball Tournament was held at Gueydan Park last weekend to support Jennings’ own USSSA Razor Baseball Team. The two-day co-ed tournament saw 13 teams compete for bragging rights, with “Got the Runs” taking the tournament title and “Jeff Davis Insurance” finishing as runners-up.

According to event organizer Elisabeth Landry, approximately $5,200 was raised with the event.

Gator hunting permit deadlines approaching

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana and Mississippi residents who want to go after alligators this fall have deadlines coming up.

Louisiana residents who want to take alligators from some state wildlife management areas and some land belonging to the Army Corps of Engineers have until Thursday to get their applications in. Other deadlines are later.

All That Jazz

The Jennings High School Jazzers held their Mini Jazzer Camp from May 28-31. The theme was “Dance of Ages” and each day’s theme for dress and dance was a different decade from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. During 70’s day, the 135 participants learned to do “The Hustle”, including (top photo, clockwise) Pre Mini Dancers ages 3 to kindergarten; Mini Dancers, first and second grades; Intermediate Dancers, third through fifth grades; Junior High Dancers; and JHS Jazzers.

Guidry named Cowboys assistant head coach

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese football head coach Matt Viator didn’t have to look far outside of the McNeese family to find a new defensive coordinator as he has named former Cowboy standout Lance Guidry to guide his team’s defense, as well as hold the title of assistant head coach.

Guidry, a Welsh native, fills the spot that was vacated when Mike Collins left to become defensive coordinator at Sam Houston State.
