Hurricane forecast: Another busy Atlantic season

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Federal forecasters are predicting yet another busy hurricane season.

Thursday’s outlook calls for 13 to 20 named storms, 7 to 11 that strengthen into hurricanes and 3 to 6 that become major hurricanes.

Today, Friday, the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home hosted a public Veteran’s Memorial Ceremony to honor all those who have sacrificed for their country.

Jeff Davis Parish residents with access to an e-reader such as Kindle or iPad have an opportunity to participate in a world-wide reading initiative this month.

The book, “The Four Corners of the Sky” by The New York Time’s bestselling author Michael Malone, will be available for free for those with a Jeff Davis Parish Library card.

Registration is now open for the Jennings Carnegie Library Summer Reading Program for children ages 3-9 from Thursday, June 13, through Thursday, July 18. This year’s theme is “Have Book – Will Travel!” Children attending the first classes will receive a free ticket to two movies at the Strand Theatre, “Mary Poppins” on June 22 and “Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang” on July 27. The program will come with a special Hawaiian themed partY. Pre-registration is open now. Call the library at 821-5517 for more information.

Iota High bids farewell to 77 graduates

IOTA – The Iota High School seniors bid farewell to their classmates, friends, teachers and school at a graduation ceremony held Tuesday at Bulldog Stadium.

The class of 77 students WAS awarded nearly half a million dollars in scholarships for continued education.
