Jeff Davis Parish schools resumed their classes after the annual two weeks’ vacation over the Christmas holidays and all schools reported attendances about the same as before the holidays.
1938 - A sudden heart attack last night claimed the life of Joseph Smith, 67, one of the best known men in this area, who was know far and wide as “Watermelon” Smith and “Potato” Smith, because of the excellent variety of watermelons and potatoe he raised each year and peddled about in and around the city.
1938 - Construction work began today to convert the exterior of the F.B. Zigler home on Clara Street into a colonial design. The project will see the erection of four fleeted columns 22 feet high holding up a two story porch which will extend entirely over the 42 foot frontage of the residenc. The porch will extend ten feet out from the home and will have a tile floor.
1938- Fire Chief A. O. Eastman, head of the Jennings fire fighting brigade for the past generation was presented a gold watch by the firemen and citizens in appreciation of his faithful and loyal service at the annual meeting of the Fire Department last night. The watch was presented in a fitting speech by J. E. Edwards who said it was giving the chief who gain grateful appreciation of a long and faithful service.
1938 - City council, met and adopted an ordinance prohibiting the sale of fireworks of every description within the city limits and Mayor L. T Moses announced the ordnance would be strictly enforced.
1938 - The year was less than two hours old when the first fire alarm was sounded, sending trucks to the garage of Mrs. Laura Andrus at Third and Cutting, where an automobile had caught fire.
1938 - One of the most appreciated New Year’s gift received in Jennings Sunday was by Mrs. Tom Clark, whose son, Thomas Clark called her by long distance from New Rochelle, New York where he has been located for the past year.
