Fourth- and fifth-grade students in the Early ACT Club at Welsh Elementary School cast their votes for officers on Thursday with voting machines provided by the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Department of Voter Outreach program. According to Welsh Elementary Principal Arlene Heinen, the school learned of this free service in July and was eager to take advantage of it for some of the school elections. Heinen explained that Richard Hartley, director of Voter Outreach for the Secretary of State, informed the schools of the free use of voting machines as well as many other free services the department offers. The program also provides free lesson plans and activities for the students who visit the governor’s mansion or the State Capitol, as well as coloring books of Louisiana, literature and much more, according to Heinen.
