Louisiana State Treasurer John Kennedy told one local club’s members that the state must get its $29.6 billion budget under control, and the way to do it is to downsize state government and not to raise taxes.Kennedy spoke to the Jeff Davis Parish Pachyderm Club on Thursday, calling for cuts to help meet Gov. Bobby Jindal’s $3.6 billion proposed decrease of the state’s budget for next year. He said the state’s budget has ballooned by $17.9 billion since former Gov. Mike Foster took office in 1996. A state like Tennessee, he said – which has a 45 percent larger population than Louisiana – only has a budget of $24.8 billion. Kentucky, whose population is similar in size to Louisiana, carries a $22.3 billion budget.
