Msgt. Jack A. Gillis of Jennings was born in Missouri in 1923, but because of his father’s job with International Harvester Company, the family moved to France when Gillis was only 5 years old. It wasn’t until he was 10 that Gillis returned to the United States with his family. He said he had to basically start over in school, because he didn’t know the things the other children did.
“All I knew was French,” he explained.
