When Pearl Harbor was bombed in December of 1941, CFC Henry Stanley of Vinton was only 13 years old. Though he was too young to join the military at the time, when he was of age, he willingly signed up to serve his country. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy, just in time to be sent overseas during the last year of World War II. Though many debated on enlisting, Stanley felt it wasn’t really optional.
