The Lies That Lead To Idolatry

Dear Editor,

Perhaps the greatest temptation towards idolatry is worship and serve self. Though few will admit idolizing self. We find that evidence shows otherwise.

As far back as Adam and Eve, we see that human tendency is to desire to be our own god. And Satan’s tactics have not changed; he still uses the world’s systems and our fleshly desires, to lure us into idolatry.

Adam and Eve were tempted when their natural desire to enjoy all God has given them turned to lust of their flesh. They actually believed God was holding back something good from them. We believe that lie when we seek all the world says will make us happy – money, fame, power, etc.

Adam and Eve, natural desire to get things from the abundance in the garden, which was freely available to them, turned to lust of the eyes desiring the one thing God said they could not have. Like them, we too believe the lie that there are no consequences to disobeying God when we seek after the forbidden.

The natural desire to accomplish good things was perverted by Adam and Even into the pride of life-desiring to be God. We too believe the lie that we can live life on our own self-sufficiency, apart from God.

As we consider destroying idols in our lives, let us not forget the one looking at us in the mirror. Avoid the lies leading to idolatry.
