AGL Resources Misled Senators

Dear Editor,

Senators, you were misled by AGL Resources and their lobbyists. Senate Bill (SB) 200 was to protect the Chicot aquifer – the only fresh water source for 15 parishes – and stop the expansion of unlimited salt dome natural gas storage caverns under Lake Peigneur in Iberia and Vermilion parishes for five years so that Environmental Impact Statements and seismic studies could be made.

Lobbyists told you that the amount of water used to leach out the salt dome caverns was no more than what farmers use. The lobbyists failed to tell you that after leaching the caverns, the salt water will be pumped into wells and never to be used again, unlike water used to irrigate crops. There were as many as 23 more storage caverns, according to a permit filed.

AGL Resources also mislead you by the number of jobs they will create. There are 10 people working at Jefferson Island Storage & Hub, LLC, and after the expansion, they will hire one more.

There is bubbling in Lake Peigneur and the cause is not known. Senator Mills showed you the video of the disaster in the lake in 1980. Senator Adley seemed to be making fun of Senator Mills. Senator Mills was showing you how delicate the lake is.

The Department of Natural Resources Office of Coastal Management issued a permit to AGL because since 2012, Lake Peigneur is part of the Louisiana coast. AGL Resources has to dredge to add more storage caverns. According to Coastal Management, they did not even bother to read all of the expert’s statements.

There are 15 parishes that use the Chicot aquifer. The Chicot aquifer has not recovered from the first salt dome cavern leaching. There are many officials that support Save Lake Peigneur and want the expansion stopped. Senator Ward, from Assumption, supported SB 200. He knows what can happen.

Sir and Madame, you failed to protect the citizens of the State of Louisiana, and it was a sad day for the people that live in the area and 90 percent of these people work in the oil and gas industry.
