Arizona tragedy shows dedication of firefighters

In the hustle and bustle of this holiday week, there is something very important the Jennings Daily News has not yet been able to say.

This newspaper works closely, obviously, with a variety of departments and offices across Jeff Davis Parish, as well as outlying areas. One group of amazing people we constantly encounter is firefighters. We meet up with them or know they are pretty much everywhere: crashes; medical calls; power or gas line troubles; floods; sites of downed trees in roadways; and, of course, fires.

If you have ever seen these men and women at work, you know they don’t stop. The minute they receive a call to action, they answer, and the reporters at this newspaper can say we have seen them run head first into dangerous situations without showing any sign of hesitation.

So when the tragic news began spreading earlier this week about the 19 heroes who gave their lives while fighting a wildfire in Arizona, our local firefighters immediately came to mind. These men and women have parents, spouses, children, siblings and friends who love them dearly. Still, knowing one fire could tear them away from a lifetime of happiness, when the alarm sounds, they jump in the trucks, throw on their gear and speed to a destination in hopes of saving the lives and homes of strangers.

Any firefighter will tell you it takes one second of something going horribly wrong for a man or woman to be lost in the line of duty.

On behalf of Jeff Davis Parish, its municipalities and rural areas, and citizens, the Jennings Daily News would like to thank all of our firefighters for the work they do that not only protects us, but makes our daily lives better. Countless lives, homes and properties have been saved simply because our firefighters want to help and that says so much about the character of our local departments.

We pray that our firefighters are always kept safe from the many dangers that come with that line of work and that they know how much they are appreciated and needed by the people of this area.
